XL-Recover version 1.1
This application allows you to recover Excel spreadsheets that have
been corrupted. If attempting to open your spreadsheet in Excel
results in the message "Unable to read file," Recover can probably help.
Recover is not guaranteed to salvage every bit of data, but will try
to create a copy of the spreadsheet that Excel will open.
Using Recover is simple: double click on the application's icon and after
reading the information screen, pull down the File menu and select Open.
You'll see a dialog box prompting you to select a spreadsheet file for
recovery. After you select your spreadsheet, a second dialog box will
prompt for a new name for the fixed version of the file.
A progress indicator will show how much of your file has been processed,
as well as what portions have been recovered or rejected. At any time,
you can pull down the "File" menu and select "Quit" to terminate the recover
process. When the processing is complete, a dialog box will appear prompting
you to click on "Okay" to continue. The file created by Recover will most
likely be missing some information that was stored in your spreadsheet,
and could even have some corrupt information. It is your responsibility to
determine how much data is lost, and the accuracy of the data that is recovered.
This program is shareware. If you find it useful please send a check or

Advanced user information:
The "Configure" option in the "File" menu offers further control over how
Recover processes your spreadsheet. The choices you'll see there are:
1. Dump discarded records to file "XL-Recover log"
2. Dump all records to log file
3. Strip document protection
4. Strip external references
5. Beep when processing is done
6. Strip records prior to rejected records
7. Strip all data records
8. Strip index record
9. Strip formats
10. Strip formulas
11. Strip dimensions
12. Strip notes
13. Strip arrays
1. Dump discarded records to file "XL-Recover log"
This option will create or overwrite a file called "XL-Recover log", and
put into it text descriptions of any records that are rejected or stripped.
Rejected records are the pieces of your file that are too corrupt to keep.
Stripped records are those you specify to be removed according to other
selections made in the configure dialog.
The log file can be used to get a general indication of what data was lost.
It is by no means a complete description of the file or the missing data.
2. Dump all records to log file
This option will add all good records to the "XL-Recover log" file described
above.
3. Strip document protection
If you have set document password protection and locked cells in a spreadsheet,
this option will allow you to unprotect the spreadsheet when you forget your
password.
Note: File protection (selected in the save as...) dialog of Excel cannot be
removed. If this kind of protection is present, Recover will stop processing
the file, since no data can be read without a password.
4. Strip external references
This option removes links to other spreadsheets.
** If you have trouble with a recovered file hanging when Excel tries to open
it, you should try removing external references.
5. Beep when processing is done
Since some files take quite a while to process, you may wish the Mac to beep
upon completion.
6. Strip records prior to rejected records
This option removes the last record prior to an area of file corruption. It's
possible for Recover to mistake a bad record as acceptable. This option depends
on the fact that errored records tend to be adjacent to one another in order to
provide additional filtering.
This option will result in less recovered data, so it should be used only if
necessary.
** If you have trouble with Excel still declaring a file is unopenable even
after recovery, you should try again with this option enabled.
7. Strip all data records
Removes all data from cells (and any formats set on individual cells).
8. Strip index record
Removes the index record, which Excel will automatically rebuild when the
recovered file is opened. This feature is normally enabled.
9. Strip formats
Removes format records which apply to multiple cells.
10. Strip formulas
Removes formula cells, and their current value. All arrays will also be stripped.
11. Strip dimensions
Removes the record which marks the highest row and column accessed.
** If you've got spreadsheets that scrolling to the right or bottom
moves you far beyond the bounds of your data, strip this record, and
Excel will recalculate the dimensions.
12. Strip notes
Removes cell notes.
13. Strip arrays
Removes formula arrays, and their current value.
